no, that's not it

2018-05-20 06:44:30 UTC

It's due to Yom tov sheni shel galuyot

2018-05-20 06:45:21 UTC

"The need for a second festival day arises from problems encountered by Jews living in the Diaspora following the Babylonian exile. The Jewish calendar, is a lunar system with months of 29 or 30 days. In Temple times, the length of the month depended on witnesses who had seen the new moon coming to the Temple in Jerusalem. Following confirmation of their evidence, a new Jewish month would be proclaimed. News of this proclamation was subsequently sent out to all Jewish communities. If no witnesses arrived, the new month was proclaimed the following day. Those communities who didn't receive word of the precise date of the beginning of the new month by the time of a festival, would keep the festival for two days, to account for the eventuality the new month wasn't proclaimed only the following day."

It is very weird, yes

2018-05-20 06:46:36 UTC

I don't get how they would know to have a festival with no witnesses in the first place

2018-05-20 06:47:24 UTC

They had an approximation of how long it is supposed to take for the new moon to get to Jerusalem?

2018-05-20 06:47:39 UTC

I wonder if they actually bothered to make astronomical observations to gauge that

2018-05-20 06:47:51 UTC

And the witness was just supposed to confirm it

2018-05-20 06:48:23 UTC

I'm talking about the new moon arriving to Jerusalem relative to their location

2018-05-20 06:48:30 UTC

why dairy?

2018-05-20 06:49:48 UTC

Most of these explanations seem super contrived to me

2018-05-20 06:50:05 UTC

It was probably just a figure of authority who really liked dairy asked his rabbis to come up with a theological reason

2018-05-20 06:50:11 UTC

Same for the partying for two days

2018-05-20 06:50:27 UTC

ashkenazi is basically european jew

2018-05-20 06:50:35 UTC

Not including Spain

2018-05-20 06:51:02 UTC

nah

2018-05-20 06:52:42 UTC

I don't think the differences are that big and they weren't in a position to have fights geographically and militarily

2018-05-20 06:53:58 UTC

Even extreme orthodox Jews seem to be mostly militant about their personal space, not about other people breaking their version of Jewish law

2018-05-20 06:54:30 UTC

So they would get very annoyed if you went to their neighbourhoods with a pork on yom kippur and probably attack you but I don't think they would care if you do it in your secular neighbourhood that much

2018-05-20 06:55:27 UTC

You don't get a lot of Jewish religious terrorism unless it's about gay people parading in Jerusalem

2018-05-20 06:55:39 UTC

Which I almost get in a way

2018-05-20 06:56:55 UTC

I'm very annoyed with any parade next to my home and I can imagine that if it was a parade that is against everything I believe that is doing it in my city in a very provocative way just to spite me I would be very very angry

2018-05-20 06:57:12 UTC

I wouldn't use violence but I can see the religious nutjobs' perspective

2018-05-20 07:00:07 UTC

I don't condone violence but when a teasing bully gets punched for being an asshole I don't see it as a big issue compared to a person who wasn't looking for trouble

2018-05-20 07:01:44 UTC

Much in the same way that when you go and riot at an enemy nation's border and then get shot you kind of had it coming

2018-05-20 07:05:34 UTC

Isn't Shavuot a 3 days holiday?

2018-05-20 07:05:45 UTC

I think people get back to work tomorrow

2018-05-20 07:05:51 UTC

That's the only thing I know about it

2018-05-20 07:05:56 UTC

Yesterday it was the eve

2018-05-20 07:05:58 UTC

today is the holiday

2018-05-20 07:06:04 UTC

tomorrow back to routine

2018-05-20 07:06:08 UTC

Yeah because it was over the weekend

2018-05-20 07:06:15 UTC

But usually it's 3 days

2018-05-20 07:06:53 UTC

I didn't even notice there was a holiday I thought I needed to go to work today

2018-05-20 07:06:54 UTC

not according to Wikipedia

2018-05-20 07:07:02 UTC

Aren't you in the army?

2018-05-20 07:07:07 UTC

Yeah

2018-05-20 07:07:18 UTC

So you also work while being a soldier?

2018-05-20 07:07:27 UTC

No no I meant the army

2018-05-20 07:07:30 UTC

ok
