wtf
Happy Shavuot by the way
to everyone
Just eat dairy products
Basically
I don't even know what the holiday is about
But I think it's very religious for some reason
For the orthodox
it was over the weekend
So it's only one day of vacation
Maybe that's what it meant?
no, that's not it
It's due to Yom tov sheni shel galuyot
"The need for a second festival day arises from problems encountered by Jews living in the Diaspora following the Babylonian exile. The Jewish calendar, is a lunar system with months of 29 or 30 days. In Temple times, the length of the month depended on witnesses who had seen the new moon coming to the Temple in Jerusalem. Following confirmation of their evidence, a new Jewish month would be proclaimed. News of this proclamation was subsequently sent out to all Jewish communities. If no witnesses arrived, the new month was proclaimed the following day. Those communities who didn't receive word of the precise date of the beginning of the new month by the time of a festival, would keep the festival for two days, to account for the eventuality the new month wasn't proclaimed only the following day."
It is very weird, yes
I don't get how they would know to have a festival with no witnesses in the first place
They had an approximation of how long it is supposed to take for the new moon to get to Jerusalem?
I wonder if they actually bothered to make astronomical observations to gauge that
And the witness was just supposed to confirm it
I'm talking about the new moon arriving to Jerusalem relative to their location
Most of these explanations seem super contrived to me
It was probably just a figure of authority who really liked dairy asked his rabbis to come up with a theological reason
Same for the partying for two days
ashkenazi is basically european jew
Not including Spain
nah
I don't think the differences are that big and they weren't in a position to have fights geographically and militarily
Even extreme orthodox Jews seem to be mostly militant about their personal space, not about other people breaking their version of Jewish law
So they would get very annoyed if you went to their neighbourhoods with a pork on yom kippur and probably attack you but I don't think they would care if you do it in your secular neighbourhood that much
You don't get a lot of Jewish religious terrorism unless it's about gay people parading in Jerusalem
Which I almost get in a way
I'm very annoyed with any parade next to my home and I can imagine that if it was a parade that is against everything I believe that is doing it in my city in a very provocative way just to spite me I would be very very angry
I wouldn't use violence but I can see the religious nutjobs' perspective
I don't condone violence but when a teasing bully gets punched for being an asshole I don't see it as a big issue compared to a person who wasn't looking for trouble
Much in the same way that when you go and riot at an enemy nation's border and then get shot you kind of had it coming
Isn't Shavuot a 3 days holiday?
I think people get back to work tomorrow
That's the only thing I know about it
Yesterday it was the eve
