The zulu in the film at least, were painfully tribal. it was a primitive culture compared with the british empire. The reason why I would say that they portrayed in a positive light is that they played into characteristics we think highly of. Selflessness, putting your life at risk for your comrades. an ability to empathise and appreciate the strength and valor of your enemy.

Just look at battelfield 5

if you take a purely tactical approach to it, of course you're not going to think well of the zulu

In the movie they keep running in, getting close (while suffering countless causulties), stab a bunch of Brits, retreat, than repeat.
