They weren't primitive people. They had invented and perfected two of the most seaworthy vessels in existence at the time, they had what was, for that era, amazingly decent treatment of (free) women, and their range of contact with other cultures stretched from western Asia to North America.
They also stole almost anything slower than they were, just like many other civilized cultures did - and do."
