it's been giving me garbage results recently you know there's a problem when a bunch of worthless journos come up instead of a wiki when you're looking for something you see in a game

Startpage is google without trackers, but it still uses Google algorithms, so it'll bury some results you're looking for. There's Gibiru, but it's only useful for certain things.
