Looking good excels you in every form of interaction with other people. Shadows don’t get good job offers and people don’t buy them drinks at the bar. More often then not other people can open doors that you couldn’t open just by yourself.

And even then kissing ass is the most crucial thing

Gaining competence is very important. But gaining a large network of competent friends lets you cover WAY more ground.
