9mm or 45 acp?

2020-07-03 12:06:09 UTC

9mm > 45 acp

2020-07-03 12:06:13 UTC

Change mind

2020-07-03 13:43:54 UTC

Kinetic energy

2020-07-03 13:45:39 UTC

I have a 9mm, 40, and 45. I carry the 45 as its the only caliber to make it through both sides of a 55 gallon drum. The 9 makes pennies and one out of 10 of the .40 makes it

2020-07-03 14:03:45 UTC

The .45 is the slowest of the 3 but has the greatest mass. Energy is a factor of velocity^2. However the 9 isnt that much faster. The .45 barely breaks the sound barrier. Good for suppressing and has the greatest penetration power. Hollow points make the largest cavity of the 3 as well.

With that in mind, nothing substitutes good shot placement. A .22lr is more lethal with a good shot placement than a .45 miss.

2020-07-03 14:05:48 UTC

And with a good shot placement, you dont need 15 rounds or any "follow up" shots.

2020-07-03 14:06:32 UTC

Take your time, hold it right, line up your sights, take a breath, and slowly squeeze the trigger with the TIP of your finger.

2020-07-03 14:40:21 UTC

Keep in mind when suppressing that barely breaking the sound barrier still breaks the sound barrier.
Good shot placement with a 22lr will mitigate any need for follow up.
Penetration is dependent on load. Specifically, velocity. Look at the 5.7x28

I personally prefer .45 because it makes a bigger hole. I carried a G30 (subcompact double stack .45) for years. I switched to a 9mm just because weight.
The most Important thing is that there is no replacement for proficiency with your weapon. As Ironman said:
Take a breath, line em up, squeeze.
At the end of the day it's what you're most comfortable with. I carried a G21 (full framed .45) for years, and I loved it because target re-aquisition was easier than with a .40, and I hadn't any experience with a 9mm. I'm at the point where I'm just as proficient with a 9 milli than I am with a .45, and I choose 9mm because weight.

@SumoDuckieive shot a ruger lv12 380 and it's nice and small

2020-07-03 15:22:34 UTC

I hunt deer with my .22

2020-07-03 15:23:03 UTC

My marlin has more kills than all my other guns combined

2020-07-03 15:24:28 UTC

And it doesn't scare away the whole hillside. That way my buddies can still hunt that day. 🤣

2020-07-03 15:27:41 UTC

The difference in stopping power between handgun calibers is honestly negligible

human tissue is incredibly elastic, and handgun ammo is travelling slow enough that it can deform without tearing. The damage they do cause is because of the bullet itself

2020-07-03 15:29:50 UTC

Whereas rifle bullets are travelling so fast and carrying so much energy that they cause the flesh to go past its breaking point, causing disproportionate damage

2020-07-03 15:30:09 UTC

It's like stretching a rubber band beyond its breaking point, vs cutting it

2020-07-03 16:36:25 UTC

> A few more rounds
@Mauler "more than twice as many" is "a few more?"

2020-07-03 16:48:47 UTC
2020-07-03 16:48:49 UTC

Yes

2020-07-03 16:49:33 UTC

LOL

2020-07-03 16:49:35 UTC

In a single stack 1911

2020-07-03 16:50:07 UTC

I'm thinking of when I stepped up from a P220 to a P226. Same size pistol, went from not-quite-flush 8 round mags to not-quite-flush 18 round mags.

2020-07-03 16:50:11 UTC

A single stack 9mm 1911 holds 3 more rounds

2020-07-03 18:19:07 UTC

I do like that my M&P holds 17... Its very nice

2020-07-03 18:37:40 UTC

Yeah the sig p320 right now comes with a 17rd but they send you 2 21 rd mags after purchase

2020-07-03 18:43:52 UTC

Nice.

2020-07-03 19:08:05 UTC

I have 4 mags that I carry with my 1911. 2 7 rds and 2 8 rds. It always has one in the chamber so I have the 7 rd in it and the 8 rds in the holster. The other 7 rd is usually in my back pocket. Thats 31 rounds. If I cant stop my target with that, I deserve to die. Especially when I get consistent 4 to 5 inch groupings at 50 yards and can hit a poor little bunny rabbit in the head, right behind the eye, at the end of the driveway.
