I have a 9mm, 40, and 45. I carry the 45 as its the only caliber to make it through both sides of a 55 gallon drum. The 9 makes pennies and one out of 10 of the .40 makes it

The .45 is the slowest of the 3 but has the greatest mass. Energy is a factor of velocity^2. However the 9 isnt that much faster. The .45 barely breaks the sound barrier. Good for suppressing and has the greatest penetration power. Hollow points make the largest cavity of the 3 as well.

With that in mind, nothing substitutes good shot placement. A .22lr is more lethal with a good shot placement than a .45 miss.

And with a good shot placement, you dont need 15 rounds or any "follow up" shots.

Take your time, hold it right, line up your sights, take a breath, and slowly squeeze the trigger with the TIP of your finger.

Keep in mind when suppressing that barely breaking the sound barrier still breaks the sound barrier.
Good shot placement with a 22lr will mitigate any need for follow up.
Penetration is dependent on load. Specifically, velocity. Look at the 5.7x28

I personally prefer .45 because it makes a bigger hole. I carried a G30 (subcompact double stack .45) for years. I switched to a 9mm just because weight.
The most Important thing is that there is no replacement for proficiency with your weapon. As Ironman said:
Take a breath, line em up, squeeze.
At the end of the day it's what you're most comfortable with. I carried a G21 (full framed .45) for years, and I loved it because target re-aquisition was easier than with a .40, and I hadn't any experience with a 9mm. I'm at the point where I'm just as proficient with a 9 milli than I am with a .45, and I choose 9mm because weight.

human tissue is incredibly elastic, and handgun ammo is travelling slow enough that it can deform without tearing. The damage they do cause is because of the bullet itself

Whereas rifle bullets are travelling so fast and carrying so much energy that they cause the flesh to go past its breaking point, causing disproportionate damage

It's like stretching a rubber band beyond its breaking point, vs cutting it
