Most of the public still dismisses China as harmless. In a military sense they are. In an economic sense they are the powerhouse that America either needs to learn to play tough with or lose.

A lot of people are complacent as well. Lots of people don't care enough to check if what they're buying is made in China for example.

China also has a large market for rare earth metals too
