I think I found the answer to all this confusion. Southern Democrats were not Democrats, they were Dixiecrats, the conservative wing of the Democrat party.

Secession wasn’t illegal until 1869.

The north still had slaves.

The person who created secession was James Madison, author of Bill of Rights and Constitution.

Almost no one in the confederacy owned slaves.

The 10th Amendment made each state its own country.

Without the context of these facts, you’re advancing the lies of modern Democrats.

Robert E. Lee could have headed the army to invade Virginia. In fact Virginia was one of the last states to secede. General Scott asked Lee to head the force on behalf of Lincoln, because Lee worked with him in the Mexican-American war. Lee was an artillery officer. Also one of two cadets to go through West Point military academy with ZERO demerits.

Because Virginia was a COUNTRY - he declined, because as I observed above, almost no one owned slaves. Most white people were poor farmers.

Look at Jackson taking 13,000 men and his Shenandoah campaign - taking on three Union armies of over 75,000 men - while Lee defended Richmond from General McClellan in the Peninsula Campaign.. Virginia was invaded. Men and women who did not own slaves - which was mostly everybody - would die. So Jackson and Lee defended their sovereign country.

Jackson funded a school for his slaves during the entire war. Which was illegal. But didn’t free them because they’d be lynched and would economically be in a poor position. Lee only had slaves through his marriage. Called it a morally repugnant institution.

Before calling it the War of Southern treachery - ask yourself - how much do you know? And how much do you think you know?
