I think 'grifter' in this context means exploiting credulous people with things to which you know they will respond well, as opposed to what you believe or can support sufficiently to yourself

Robert doesn't do this for the money, if he did, he'd be more inclined to approach in a more biased fashion like you find with other commentators. He knows that his method of approaching things is not the one that will lead to the quickest buck/fastest growth.
