I do think there are many likely explanations that aren't criminal. I actually think this would be way more likely than anything criminal, especially given the Mueller investigation didn't turn anything up. But the tax thing has been a massive cloud and source of friction for him so I do believe he would just release them and be done with it if they were as "perfect" as he described.
