correct, however you cant buy said handgun until 21 years old. so if its givted to me, is it allowed?

I wouldn't rely on google for your legal advice, keep in mind a lot of those results are likely wrong, unless you're reading the statute itself.

Or rather, it's best to assume it's wrong.

As this is a question of State Law (New Mexico), and the question is not settled in your mind, your own personally freedom is paramount and thus, would not open carry a handgun until the question is settled. Or, as stated above, you reach the known lawful age of 21 before you are able to get a professional opinion. REMEMBER - this is just guidance and NOT legal advice 😄

Always look out for your own legal best interest rather than risking it.

And, always get a legal opinion from a licensed attorney IN WRITING (as you never know, it is possible, even if remote, that an attorney may give bad advice and your INTENT was to comply with the Law).

INTENT is important. If you are going from the opinion of an attorney and he/she gave bad advice, having such advice IN WRITING from said attorney is PRIMA FACIE evidence of your INTENT to comply with the Law.

And unfortunately, if you were to get caught breaking that law, I'm pretty sure you'd be risking some of your fundamental rights, and I honestly don't think it's worth it.

Thanks for the flag @Bey -- @Dylan Gpnzales my team has pretty strict rules here that we can't help on non-Arizona issues, as we are only licensed in Arizona (I'm also licensed in Cali but we don't take cases there), so I apologize if that left you feeling frustrated. And for those reasons, the other comments are on point - I'd contact a New Mexico lawyer to get the specifics. Often times, a lot of the gun stores in your area will have some good resources or books on local laws, as well.
