Purgatory is biblical and patristic

2020-10-31 22:31:26 UTC

the EO have their own "version" of purgatory called toll houses

2020-10-31 22:32:43 UTC

The central dividing issue between EO and Catholicism is the papacy due to the schism of 1054

2020-10-31 22:34:00 UTC

The Prots don’t all hold to the five solas, though. That’s noteworthy.

2020-10-31 22:34:01 UTC

So EO is kinda like RC lite?

2020-10-31 22:34:06 UTC

No, not at all.

2020-10-31 22:34:34 UTC

We’re fundamentally different in our philosophies and understandings of God, the Trinity, and many other things.

2020-10-31 22:34:42 UTC

The “Catholics without a Pope” meme is misleading.

2020-10-31 22:34:47 UTC

We share 1000 years of history so there's similarities, but since then there have been developments

2020-10-31 22:34:50 UTC

We are far more conciliar.

2020-10-31 22:35:03 UTC

Yes, that’s a better description. Similar on the surface but we are *very* different.

2020-10-31 22:35:31 UTC

You’re scratching the surface right now. Wait until you get into Palamas and Aquinas.

2020-10-31 22:36:32 UTC

The Orthodox reject papal supremacy, the Filioque, Catholic purgatory, mortal/venial distinction, shaved priests, the idea of developing doctrine, and using unleavened bread in the Eucharist to name a few talking points.

2020-10-31 22:36:39 UTC

Palamism and Thomism are not serious, irreconcilable differences

2020-10-31 22:36:53 UTC

They are, but that’s neither here nor there.

2020-10-31 22:36:57 UTC

do you watch Jay Dyer?

2020-10-31 22:37:01 UTC

Sometimes.

2020-10-31 22:37:12 UTC

you should stop watching him

2020-10-31 22:37:17 UTC

I am aware of aquinas but have not read any books and my experience with apologetics thus far has been just watching yt vids/debates with like ravi, lennox, WLC, etc

2020-10-31 22:37:34 UTC

I don’t really take much value in a Catholic telling me to stop watching Dyer.

2020-10-31 22:38:05 UTC

He’s not even my main source lol.

2020-10-31 22:38:11 UTC

Even if you're EO he's extremely belligerent and a terrible representative of the faith

2020-10-31 22:38:23 UTC

One can see the good in him.

2020-10-31 22:39:01 UTC

Whatever good is overshadowed by his ego-mania

2020-10-31 22:39:08 UTC

Fr. Spyridon, Fr. Josiah Trenham, Fr. John Behr are pretty good.

2020-10-31 22:39:24 UTC

If dirty hands give you money, it’s still money.

2020-10-31 22:39:48 UTC

Thats the sin of avarice

2020-10-31 22:40:18 UTC

You’re being petty and dishonest at this point. It’s a metaphor. Your own Pope is a modernist and heretic according to most, yet you still submit to his authority. It’s the same line of reasoning.

2020-10-31 22:40:36 UTC

There it is

2020-10-31 22:41:13 UTC

There’s nothing left to say. You just want me to be angry. God bless you, friend.

2020-10-31 22:42:27 UTC

oof

2020-10-31 22:43:11 UTC

2020-10-31 22:43:45 UTC

@Deleted User if you have questions about the Catholic faith you're welcome to join the server "Catholic Community Chat"

2020-10-31 22:46:58 UTC

I think id rather stay here

2020-10-31 23:09:13 UTC

@Vincentius Hey sorry for the ping but, you seem pretty knowledge about Catholic teachings. I'm a Protestant but, is there anything resource-wise you'd recommend for someone who wants to give Catholicism a fair shake?

2020-10-31 23:25:08 UTC

Of course. The best place to start is the Catechism. There's many different versions due to developments over time but I personally recommend the Catechism of the Council of Trent since it was written in response to the rise of the Protestant revolt. You should be able to find a free PDF online. In terms of websites there's vatican.va which contains important magisterial documents, catholic answers website catholic.com for various questions, newadvent.org that provides various works connected to the church (church fathers, ecumenical councils, St. Thomas Aquina's *Summa*, etc) and of course you can find the rosary prayer anywhere. You're also welcome to join the server i linked above, lmk if you need anything else.

Thank you so much for the quick response. I'll start to go over some of these in the morning. God bless!

@Deleted User Alright. If you ever want to know more about Orthodoxy, don't let the bitterness from those inside or outside of it sway your opinion too much. Religion is naturally a touchy subject.

2020-10-31 23:48:06 UTC

I can link you some people worth watching or servers worth joining.
