My grandfather was an officer in the army during Vietnam. He put together a mission that, if they succeeded, could've helped turn the tides, a bit. Wouldn't have won the war, obviously, but from what I read in his notes and mission draft that he's kept, it was a pretty decent plan. Only issue was, they were already waiting for them. They knew they had a weak spot in their defenses abd quickly stocked it with bodies. Much quicker than my grandfather's team could get ready. They went out in a 32 man team. 28 died before they could get out. My grandfather was one of the 4-5 that made it and it's destroyed him, since.

Same with the unit I rolled around with in Afghanistan. My squad got attached (unofficially) to 3-5 marines in Afghanistan. They lost so many people, their unit was deemed combat ineffective and grounded from deployments.
