On Earth, but the same is true in space. In space the direction to which things are being attracted is down (since there is a mass attracting it)

Let me run you down a few of the reasons that I've heard and maybe what I even believe might be the cause of it

1. Things are lighter/heavier than air
2. Density/Buoyancy
3. Electromagnetism

density and buoyancy has no direction, explain a vacuum
