in the solar system you can tell how many AU something is far from eact other without knowing how long an AU is

there was a time where we knew the distance between each planet ti a higher precision in AU than we knew of the length of an AU

its called trigonometrey
you can find the ratios between each side length without knowing the lengths themselves

using the angle angle side rule
even if you dont know the length of the side
you vcan just define that side as one of that sidelength and then get the other side length in ratio to that

as we did with defining the distance between the sun and earth as one AU
then we did the trigonemetry between each other planet
to get the distance to and between those in AU

so you can know to a higher presition of AU between the planets than the length of an AU itself

you dont even need to know the lengh of an AU

same way you can grab a stick
not know its length at all but still measure things in units of that length to a prety high precision
