SOUTHPORT, N.C. – An entire police department in North Carolina was put on leave after the arrest of the department’s chief and lieutenant, according to WECT.
The Southport Police Department’s police chief and lieutenant were arrested Thursday for allegedly moonlighting as truck drivers while officially on the clock at the police department.
All police operations in the city were suspended after the arrests, and the whole police force is out on paid administrative leave.
SPD Chief Gary Smith, 46, and Lt. Michael Christian Simmons, 48, face charges of conspiracy to obtain property by false pretenses, willful failure to discharge duties and obstruction of justice.
Smith and Simmons are accused of driving overnight shifts for a trucking company while on the clock at the Southport Police Department. The name of the trucking company has not been released.
The allegations state that the trucking jobs took to the two high-ranking officers out of the city and county while they were supposed to be on patrol in Southport.
Smith was arrested Thursday morning and placed under a $10,000 unsecured bond. He posted bail and was released, WECT reports.
Simmons was arrested during a Thursday afternoon news conference regarding the investigation.

It is indeed that I get before you today with a heart laden with grief for all these events that happened today,” said Southport Mayor Jerry Dove, according to WECT. “It was a shock to me to hear all these, being a former chief and knowing the officers that worked in that department and hired at least half of them.”
The mayor and city’s board of alderman request the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office to lead law enforcement in Southport until further notice.

State board starts process to remove Spectrum Charter as cable provider in NY

ALBANY, NY (WROC) - New York state took steps Friday to kick cable giant Charter Spectrum out of the state.
The decision comes after a hearing was held Friday on the 2016 merger of Charter Communications and Time Warner Cable. During the meeting, the commission moved to rescind the company's merger approval.
Among the issues, the state cites the company has failed the following objectives:
• The company’s repeated failures to meet deadlines;
• Charter’s attempts to skirt obligations to serve rural communities;
• Unsafe practices in the field;
• Its failure to fully commit to its obligations under the 2016 merger agreement; and
• The company’s purposeful obfuscation of its performance and compliance obligations to the Commission and its customers.
In a statement, the New York State Public Service Commission writes, "These recurring failures led the Commission to the broader conclusion that the company was not interested in being a good corporate citizen and that the Commission could no longer in good faith and conscience allow it to operate in New York. Today’s actions are meant to address Charter’s failings and to ensure New York has a partner interested in the public good, not just lining its pockets."

Charter's repeated failures to serve New Yorkers and honor its commitments are well documented and are only getting worse. After more than a year of administrative enforcement efforts to bring Charter into compliance with the Commission’s merger order, the time has come for stronger actions to protect New Yorkers and the public interest,” added Commission Chair John Rhodes. “Charter’s non-compliance and brazenly disrespectful behavior toward New York State and its customers necessitates the actions taken today seeking court-ordered penalties for its failures, and revoking the Charter merger approval.”
Charter now has 60 days to plan for an "orderly transition" to a successor cable provider.

COUDERSPORT, Pa. (18 NEWS) - The following is a news release from UMPC Cole.
UPMC Cole has notified 790 patients treated at UPMC Cole that their
personal Information may have been inappropriately accessed.
“We apologize for any concern or inconvenience that this may cause for our patients. I want to stress that patient care was never affected,” said UPMC Cole’s President and Senior Executive, Ed Pitchford. “UPMC is committed to meeting our patients’ privacy expectations. We cannot confirm if any of the information was used for improper purposes, but, out of an abundance of caution, we deemed it appropriate to inform those possibly affected by this breach.”
As a result of UPMC Cole’s internal investigation, it was determined that there were two phishing attacks (e-mails sent from an external source that look like they are from a trusted source attempting to obtain sensitive information and often contain links to a phony login page or fake website) on June 7th and June 14th that were discovered through staff reports of the receipt of the e-mails. The phishing attacks were isolated to e-mail accounts and no medical records systems were breached. The following information was discovered in the e-mails to varying degrees for each patient, including patients’ names, dates of birth, scheduling information, types of procedures, names of providers, and other general treatment information. No patient Social Security numbers were accessed during the phishing attacks.
