Suspect Arrested For Anti-Semitic ‘Hate Crimes,’ But It’s Who He Is That Destroys Media Narrative
Police have made an arrest of a man who they said left death threats and other disturbing anti-Semitic graffiti inside a synagogue in Brooklyn. The man also allegedly set other fires including at a yeshiva and another fire at a Jewish banquet hall. But it’s who he is that’s causing social media comment.
26-year-old James Polite was charged with four counts of criminal mischief as a hate crime and making graffiti. The graffiti included “Kill all Jews,” “Die Jew Rats” and Hitler.” Polite was also charged in regards to the fires. He was sent to Woodhull Hospital for psychiatric observation.
Polite was caught after reviewing and releasing surveillance footage of him.
But while a lot of media picked up the original story and some people sought to suggest that this was somehow the fault of President Donald Trump or the right-wing, many in the media were not filling in the blanks as to exactly who the suspect was.
Polite is a ‘queer’ black Democratic activist who used to work for the Obama campaign. He started as a canvasser in Obama’s first presidential campaign when he was 15. He then met Christine Quinn at an LGBT rally for Obama. Quinn is the Speaker of the New York City Council. Quinn took him under her wing, having him intern in her office in City Hall. He even worked on anti-hate crime initiatives in an ironic twist. He even worked on her re-election campaign and her unsuccessful campaign for Mayor of New York.
Quinn even helped Polite get into college, calling the president at Brandeis and telling him to do everything he could for the young man.
And he got help from the New York Times and was featured in a profile in the paper of December of last year.

The Times’ charity, “The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund, took over Mr. Polite’s case” as he aged out of the foster care system, and helped him attend Brandeis.
“Mr. Polite hopes to graduate in May with degrees in African-American studies and political science, and took two classes over the summer to stay on pace,” the profile said. “In June, Children’s Aid used $856 from the Neediest Cases Fund for school supplies and fees not covered by his financial aid package.”
On Facebook, he shared a paper hosted on Brandeis’ website from the Journal of Black Studies about “witchcraft, race and resistance in colonial New England,” highlighting how “Whites accused blacks of the crime of witchcraft in New England.”
The Times profile also pictured Polite next to a smiling couple, Joshua Waletzky and Jenny Levison. They “wanted to foster an ‘L.G.B.T.Q. youth’ on the brink of aging out of the system,” the Times wrote. “Although Mr. Polite was not legally adopted — his relationship with his biological parents has improved in recent years — Ms. Levison called it a ‘moral adoption.’ He says he considers the couple his second set of parents.”

And while his Facebook suggests some kind of a meltdown in the past few days, there were questions of anti-Semtism in other posts.
But prior to Polite being arrested, Democrats were using the incident urging people to get out and vote to “stop the spread of hate.”
Before it had been known that the suspect was a Democratic activist being paid by taxpayers to work on hate crime issues, Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he was asking the state’s Hate Crimes Task Force to investigate the incident, and pointed to “an additional $10 million grant program to help protect New York’s non-public schools and cultural centers, including religious-based institutions. The disgusting rhetoric and heinous violence in this nation has reached a fever pitch and is ripping at the fabric of America.”
And one of two Democratic New York candidates speaking at the event, Jim Gaughran, said:
What this incident highlighted is the need for a change in our current political climate. Hate, bigotry, and fear-mongering have become all too common in today’s society and that needs to change. This change won’t happen on its own, however. It is up to us! That’s why it is so important that every single person gets out and votes in Tuesday’s election so we can stop the spread of hate.
Ilana Glazer of Comedy Central’s “Broad City” who had to cancel a political event she was doing at the temple after the graffiti, blamed white supremacy on Democracy Now.
According to the New York Times, half the ‘hate crimes’ have been anti-Semitic in nature in 2018. But they also reported something else that doesn’t fit the Democratic narrative.

The Times wrote about the rising tide of anti-Semitic hate crimes committed in New York City, where anti-Semitic incidents have comprised half of all hate crimes in 2018. The Times wrote, “To put that figure in context, there have been four times as many crimes motivated by bias against Jews — 142 in all — as there have against blacks. Hate crimes against Jews have outnumbered hate crimes targeted at transgender people by a factor of 20.”
Here’s the kicker: The Times author wrote, “During the past 22 months, not one person caught or identified as the aggressor in an anti-Semitic hate crime has been associated with a far right-wing group, Mark Molinari, commanding officer of the police department’s Hate Crimes Task Force, told me. ‘I almost wish it was sometimes more clear cut,’ he said. ‘It’s every identity targeting every identity.’”
