OPEC nations agree to increase production
The Grind
On Saturday, OPEC and other major oil producers agreed to boost production following an increase in prices.
The agreement, which was spearheaded by Saudi Arabia, aims to increase crude production by 1 million barrels per day starting in July.
The actual amount is likely to be closer to 600,000, said sources close to the matter, because some nations are unable to increase output.
The Implication
OPEC and 10 other nations in January 2017 decided to cut production by 1.8 million barrels per day in order to help the market recover from a supply glut which significantly damaged the economies of major producers.
Thanks to larger-than-expected cuts from Saudi Arabia and production outages in countries like Venezuela, compliance with the 2017 deal has reached 150%. In the meantime, oil prices have increased by more than 40%.
The deal reached last weekend will bring compliance back down to 100%, said Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak. The deal does not provide specific numbers in terms of output.
China and India have urged OPEC to significantly boost production in order to prevent an oil deficit that could undermine the global economy, while Trump has blamed OPEC for the price increase.
Trump on Friday tweeted he hoped OPEC would "increase output substantially. Need to keep prices down!"
Oil Ministers from Saudi Arabia and Russia made it clear that pressure from Trump did not affect their decision to boost supply. "It is obvious that we are not being driven by tweets but base our actions on deep market analysis," said Novak.
Iran, meanwhile, insists Trump's sanctions on Iran and Venezuela are responsible for the increase in prices and had urged OPEC members not to submit to pressure from Trump.

Well in Vancouver they have places where you can go get clean needles and a clean area to shoot up. On the 2nd floor they have people who can help them sober up. How about they put the counselors on the first floor and make it more accessible, instead of “clean area to shoot up” on the first floor
