LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -- A new law takes effect July 1, limiting prescriptions for opioids to seven days for acute pain.

It's a move to help curb the states opioid epidemic. But those who suffer from chronic pain are worried how it will affect them.

"Without them, my pain can be so severe that I'm just shriveled up on the sofa," Karlyn Beavers said.

Diagnosed with diagnosed with Crohn's disease, Beavers suffers from chronic pain. Now that opioid prescriptions are shortened, she says sufferers are still getting hit with consequences.

"And so now our doctors are telling us, 'we've got to ween you back, we've got to take you off, in some cases, cut you off completely.' And so that's where the problem lies."

But Lt. Governor Brian Calley says that those with chronic pain won't be affected. The law is designed to stop addictions before they start, by cutting down on unnecessary long prescriptions.

"We know that these types of changes will make a very very big change on the number of people addicted to prescriptions, but also those addicted to heroin," he said.

Calley says the idea for the law came from looking at how other states handle their opioid problem, and it is necessary to reduce overdoses.

"One of the tragedies of the opioid addiction epidemic is how many addiction cases, how many kids get addicted by experimenting on leftover pills that are left in a medicine cabinet," he said.

But chronic pain suffers are left waiting, hoping they are still able to get the meds that keep them going.

"You can be healthy, happy, and feeling fine today and something can happen tomorrow to you or a loved one and the next thing you know you're fighting pain every day," Beavers said.

Also apart of the law is a system that allows prescribers to see how often patients are receiving Schedule 2-5 prescriptions.
That was enacted last year.

Bezos taking over prescriptions now
Amazon was widely expected to move into the pharmacy business.

And Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man, is creating a health care company along with JPMorgan Chase and Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway.

The PillPack deal is already scaring investors in the top two drug store chains.

CVS fell 9% in early trading. Walgreens Boots Alliance, the newest Dow component, plunged more than 10%. Walgreens was already trading lower after reporting lower same-store sales at its US pharmacies.

Rite Aid shares also fell, as did the stocks of big drug distributors Cardinal Health and AmerisourceBergen.

These and other health care stocks rose a few months ago after reports that Amazon may not have been interested in selling prescription drugs. So much for that.

It’s not clear yet just what Amazon plans for PillPack. Will it eventually merge it into a broader health care platform on Amazon or keep it independent as it has done with other subsidiaries like shoe retailer Zappos and video site Twitch?

The fact that PillPack is already licensed to sell prescriptions may persuade Amazon to keep it independent.

But all the companies said on Thursday was the deal was subject to some regulatory approvals and that the companies hope to close the transaction during the second half of this year.

Walgreens doesn’t seem too worried.

During the company’s earnings call Thursday morning, Walgreens CEO Stefano Pessina said in response to a question about the PillPack deal that the pharmacy business is “much more complex than just delivering certain pills or certain packages.”

Pessina added that physical pharmacies “will continue to be very, very important in the future.”

The PillPack acquisition comes just a week after CVS announced it will start delivering prescriptions to people’s homes — a response to growing competition from PillPack and Capsule, another online pharmacy startup.

The health care industry is also in the midst of merger mania. CVS is buying insurer Aetna for while Cigna, another insurer, is scooping up pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts. Both deals are valued at nearly $70 billion.

Those deals were announced after two mega insurer mergers were blocked by federal judges early last year on antitrust grounds. Aetna had hoped to combine with rival Humana while Cigna was planning to merge with Anthem.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A lawsuit involving a Johns Hopkins Hospital doctor is raising eyebrows.

The Daily Record of Baltimore reports a doctor is accused of unscrewing a syringe from a patient’s IV and spraying a nurse with the fluid.

The nurse claims the doctor felt comfortable spraying him because “the hospital tolerates an environment of hazing and abuse by attending physicians.”

The newspaper reports that the hospital is taking the allegations seriously but declined to comment on the lawsuit at this time.

See, this is why if you're convicted for murder (and you truly convicted the murder, not imprisoned wrongfully or had been pushed into place to take the fall for someone else), you should just be hung. No need to be on death row and people for these people for years on end to live when they should be dead. It would save us alot of money, time and headache for situations like the one currently happening in Paris. Just saying.
