His Royal Highness The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex KG GCVO visited Hong Kong on 8th June 2018. During his visit, he attended The Hong Kong Award for Young People school partner, Hong Chi Winifred Mary Cheung Morninghope School; a special school for students with mild and moderate intellectual disability.
HRH The Earl of Wessex - who is the Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation - attended a number of engagements in Hong Kong, which allowed him to meet young people undertaking the Award, as well as Award Council members and supporters who drive the Award in Hong Kong.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global, non-formal education framework which challenges young people to develop new skills, get physically active, volunteer within their community and break outside their comfort zone to experience adventure. It helps young people to explore their full potential, make positive changes for their development and prepare for their work lives.
During the school visit, HRH The Earl of Wessex was greeted by school members of HCWMCMHS, AYP Honorary President and Award Council Chairman. HRH unveiled a plaque for the ‘Reading Train[WU1] ’, which is designed to help encourage reading amongst students. Assisted by the teachers, past and present Award participants shared stories of how the Award impacted on their growth and development. Award holders from other Operating Authorities also shared their Award experiences with His Royal Highness.
The Hong Kong Award for Young People (AYP) is proud to deliver The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Hong Kong. As part of its work, AYP is dedicated to supporting young people with physical and/or learning disabilities, and those with additional support needs. Partners include Hong Chi Winifred Mary Cheung Morninghope School, Hong Kong Red Cross Margaret Trench School, HHCKLA Buddhist Po Kwong School and Lok Chi Association.
