As a result, Florence has not been able to concentrate a major portion of its wind energy into an intense eyewall, and the hurricane’s wind energy has spread out over a larger area. This will reduce the potential wind damage from the storm at landfall, but will allow a larger storm surge to build. At 5 pm EDT Wednesday, Florence’s tropical storm-force winds had expanded, and extended out up to 195 miles from the center; hurricane-force winds extended out up to 70 miles. For comparison, at landfall, Hurricane Katrina’s tropical storm-force and hurricane-force winds extended out up to 230 miles and 125 miles from the center, respectively.

Saudi Arabia is taking no chances with the longshot "NOPEC" bill, hiring former Solicitor General Ted Olson as a lobbyist to campaign against the act.

The Saudi embassy contracted with Olson’s law firm, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, to develop a white paper opposing the “No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels Act” legislation. It will also prepare a legal analysis of the bill and write an op-ed against it. The firm’s work also could include lobbying members of Congress and their staffs.

Details of the embassy’s contract with the law firm are described in a Sept. 7 filing with the Justice Department, which maintains registrations of foreign agents in the U.S.

Saudi Arabia is the de facto leader of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, which pumps about one-third of the world’s crude. The group was said in July to be consulting with lawyers to prepare a strategy to defend against proposed U.S. legislation that could open up the cartel to antitrust lawsuits, according to people familiar with the matter at the time.
Past Vetoes

Although Congress has debated various forms of legislation targeting OPEC since 2000, Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama threatened to use their veto power to prevent it becoming law. President Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked the cartel both before after being elected.

The House of Representatives introduced a version of the bill in May. The Senate has also revived legislation which would amend the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. That’s the law used more than a century ago to break up the oil empire of John Rockefeller.

The firm said it would be paid as much as $250,000 in a flat fee for the initial op-ed and legislative analysis. The embassy would pay an additional $100,000 per month if it wants the law firm to press the issue in meetings with lawmakers.

The Great Crypto Crash of 2018 looks more and more like one for the record books.

As virtual currencies plumbed new depths on Wednesday, the MVIS CryptoCompare Digital Assets 10 Index extended its collapse from a January high to 80 percent. The tumble has now surpassed the Nasdaq Composite Index’s 78 percent peak-to-trough decline after the dot-com bubble burst in 2000.

Danger Warning

Q: What is the status of Hurricane Florence?

A: Florence has developed into a powerful storm and is moving toward the coast of the United States. Forecasts expect it to hit somewhere between South and North Carolina on Friday. Based on the current strength, Florence could turn into one of the worst disasters to affect that area in a long time. Florence has weakened from a Category 4 to a Category 2 storm with sustained wind speeds up to 175 km/h (109 mph) due to strong vertical wind shear in the atmosphere. While Florence has weakened below major hurricane intensity, the wind field of the hurricane continues to grow in size. As it reaches shallower waters of the coast it may weaken further since it will not derive much more energy from the ocean. Nevertheless, Florence remains a serious threat.

Instead of draining the swamp, Donald Trump Jr. dove right in.

President Donald Trump‘s eldest son took to Instagram on Sunday to share a photo of himself in what he said was a “gator-infested swamp” during a weekend trip to Louisiana.

Trump Jr., 40, explained that he jumped into the murky and potentially dangerous waters on a bet. “This is what happens when someone bets me a good sum that there’s no way that the guy from New York City would swim in a gator infested swamp/bayou down in Louisiana,” he captioned the photo. “Easy money!!!”

Trump Jr. was in Louisiana for an annual alligator hunt to raise money for Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry. He was joined by girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana.

For a few minutes there, it looked as if Jamie Dimon was on a mission to speak truth to power, specifically U.S. President Donald Trump.

"I think I could beat Trump" in an election, the JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) chief executive said at an event Wednesday morning meant to celebrate the bank's philanthropy. "I'm as tough as he is, I'm smarter than he is."

Within a couple hours, though, the 62-year-old billionaire bank exec had thought better of taking on the President.

"I should not have said it," Dimon said in a statement released by the bank. "I'm not running for president. Proves I wouldn't make a good politician. I get frustrated because I want all sides to come together to help solve big problems."
