The real difference between Democratic Socialism and other forms is not whether or not democracy, representative or direct, exists in the formation of a workers' state, because in both cases it does. The difference is that democratic socialists want to establish socialism through democratic means, they want to run for office and implement steady reforms over time to transition from one mode of production to the next
