Archaic as in that is not the accepted definition in modern language.

2018-09-05 02:11:38 UTC

that's what i was taught in history

2018-09-05 02:12:07 UTC

i still believe it despite google

2018-09-05 02:12:13 UTC

because google agrees

2018-09-05 02:12:21 UTC

How does Google agree?

2018-09-05 02:12:58 UTC

you buy yourself a quick trip out of purgatory

2018-09-05 02:13:07 UTC

Indulgences are charity given after your sins are absolved as they normally would be for less time in purgatory. The problem was corrupt clergymen just selling indulgences and pocketing the money for themselves. The latter is the myth we're told in high school.

2018-09-05 02:13:32 UTC

The money is supposed to go to a Church-sponsored charity.

2018-09-05 02:13:41 UTC

but it didn't

2018-09-05 02:13:43 UTC

But corrupt clergymen created fake charities and pocketed the money.

2018-09-05 02:13:50 UTC

In the vast majority of cases it did.

2018-09-05 02:14:28 UTC

ik the specific indulgence saleman martin luther got pissed at was not giving the money to charity

2018-09-05 02:14:33 UTC

idk the bigger picture

2018-09-05 02:15:27 UTC

Yeah, I'm not saying it didn't happen.

2018-09-05 02:15:29 UTC

It did happen.

2018-09-05 02:15:53 UTC

But the actual practice of indulgences was a good thing when it worked, and most of the time it did.

2018-09-05 02:16:25 UTC

The act of charity purifies the soul on Earth, as it would otherwise be in Purgatory.

2018-09-05 02:16:39 UTC

As nothing unclean enters the Kingdom of Heaven.

2018-09-05 02:17:07 UTC

initially it was definitely good

2018-09-05 02:17:24 UTC

when it was just charity for the poor

2018-09-05 02:17:34 UTC

but that's not what it was at the time of the reformation

2018-09-05 02:17:47 UTC

According to Luther.

2018-09-05 02:17:48 UTC

also, again, purgatory was made up by the church

2018-09-05 02:19:25 UTC

yeah, cause an archbishop near luther was selling indulgences to pay back a loan

2018-09-05 02:19:28 UTC

When?

2018-09-05 02:19:29 UTC

seems kind of corrupt

2018-09-05 02:19:36 UTC

When was purgatory invented?

2018-09-05 02:20:04 UTC

idk when purgatory was invented

2018-09-05 02:20:09 UTC

but there's no scriptural evidence

2018-09-05 02:20:22 UTC

Limbo of the Fathers.

2018-09-05 02:20:36 UTC

Peter 3:19

2018-09-05 02:20:41 UTC

There's plenty of evidence for it.

2018-09-05 02:20:52 UTC

Purgatory far preceded indulgences.

2018-09-05 02:21:41 UTC

limbo's different than purgatory i think

2018-09-05 02:21:59 UTC

That's correct, but the existence of limbo suggests a stage between Heaven and Hell.

2018-09-05 02:22:12 UTC

Likewise for Peter 3:19.

2018-09-05 02:22:36 UTC

The concept of absolution after death before Heaven is in scripture.

2018-09-05 02:22:50 UTC

Just because purgatory itself is not explicitly mentioned doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

2018-09-05 02:22:55 UTC

It's theologically sound.

2018-09-05 02:23:02 UTC

yeah but it only applies to pre-flood people

2018-09-05 02:23:11 UTC

"Purgatory" is just a word, like the trinity which also is not mentioned in the Bible.
