Part of it I think stems from the fact that the state GOP for Ohio endorsed Renacci. Though this has greatly backfired on the Ohio GOP as various county GOP chapters and even the Ohio Senate majority leader have endorsed Mike Gibbons.

Rand Paul was also in Ohio today campaigning for Gibbons.

I am also wondering if it is possible that this will have go into a run-off election given there are five total candidates. One tried to challenge Rob Portman in 2016 in the primaries.
