In an emergency I’m sure you give your left nut for a little bit of extra distance if it’s what you need

2020-05-04 05:08:21 UTC

With 10 watts and the best antennas money can buy and the most I've gotten out in the desert was 8 miles

2020-05-04 05:08:56 UTC

Where I live in open farm land with houses you're lucky to get 3 miles

2020-05-04 05:09:23 UTC

Now that's with hand helds... a 40 watt mobile or base will obviously get you a little more

2020-05-04 05:09:47 UTC

But 10-15 miles is really it with simplex.

2020-05-04 05:10:21 UTC

I eventually wanna get one in the car but idk how to wire it

2020-05-04 05:10:40 UTC

Most plug into the lighter

2020-05-04 05:11:00 UTC

In what respect? I deal with adaptive equipment in vehicles, may be able to help

2020-05-04 05:11:25 UTC

so im seeing a ton of mixed answers here. Are UV-5R's trash or what?

2020-05-04 05:11:42 UTC

They are cheap Chinese radios

2020-05-04 05:11:57 UTC

let me rephrase that. Are they worth getting if you have nothing?

2020-05-04 05:12:02 UTC

Yes

2020-05-04 05:12:17 UTC

The answer is hardly no to that question lol

2020-05-04 05:12:33 UTC

They can just break easily... in operating conditions they all work the same at the same power levels.

2020-05-04 05:12:54 UTC

If you have nothing else, they work for emergency comms and talking on the fly. For single channel plain text.

2020-05-04 05:13:00 UTC

Whats your opinion of BF-F8HP

2020-05-04 05:13:06 UTC

But for a few hundred you can get some really good ones that are made in Japan instead and are waterproof and tough

2020-05-04 05:13:14 UTC

What is something i wont destroy in "elk season"

2020-05-04 05:13:33 UTC

2020-05-04 05:13:41 UTC

2020-05-04 05:13:45 UTC

2020-05-04 05:14:03 UTC

@[CA] SoyBoi I own a few BF8's honestly I love them because if they break it's no sweat

2020-05-04 05:14:12 UTC

2020-05-04 05:14:13 UTC

2020-05-04 05:14:42 UTC

@Yeetasaurus Rex look into yeasu, find a waterproof one and call it a day

2020-05-04 05:14:42 UTC

2020-05-04 05:19:01 UTC

2020-05-04 05:20:05 UTC

Kinda, but not really

2020-05-04 05:20:22 UTC

Depends on the area and no guarantee someone is listening

2020-05-04 05:20:42 UTC

> @redbeard I've been looking at the APX series, but I've always held off because I have 25 licensed UHF channels from the FCC and most of the people I work with use standard UHF channels.
@EDDSkitz nothing about an APX limits you from operating on an analog uhf channel if the radio is a uhf model or multiband model.

2020-05-04 05:21:16 UTC

@redbeard really? I thought they were only 700/800/900
