specifically rattlers

2020-05-24 19:14:43 UTC

i live in a part of the country where theres a shitload of rattlesnakes and medical assistance may not come quickly, because there arent any ambulances and cell service is abysmal outside of the park

2020-05-24 19:15:28 UTC

if i'm out and about and i get tagged by a rattlesnake, what should i do? i thought slapping a tourniquet on was the answer to keep the venom from reaching your heart, but it sounds like doing that will basically guarantee you lose your limb because it lets the venom sit and eat away at your tissue

2020-05-24 19:16:08 UTC

so is there something better if help is hours away? should my plan be just to weigh whether i like my arm/leg more than i like breathing and TQ it anyways?

2020-05-24 19:17:20 UTC

If the TQ sits on there long enough wouldn't you be losing the limb either way

2020-05-24 19:17:48 UTC

yeah that was kinda my thought too

2020-05-24 19:18:43 UTC

if i'm out on a hike and i get bit, i won't have cell service and thus no way to contact a lifeflight. it'll be probably 20-30 minutes to get back to my car, then another 20 minutes to get back to the park where we have a clinic that can handle snake bites

2020-05-24 19:18:58 UTC

i'm at least an hour away from help and isn't that enough time for a rattlesnake to be lethal

2020-05-24 19:19:16 UTC

i grew up in missouri, i dont know much about snakes

2020-05-24 20:08:30 UTC

Bring a suction device, like the ones they use for bug bites.

2020-05-24 20:08:35 UTC

Also, a TQ.

2020-05-24 20:08:57 UTC

Sure, the venom might eat but it’s better than it reaching your heart.

2020-05-24 20:09:19 UTC

yeah that's kinda what i thought too

2020-05-24 20:09:29 UTC

i either lose my limb or my life i'd rather lose a limb

2020-05-24 21:32:51 UTC

I.... I have questions and concerns

2020-05-24 22:26:43 UTC

i live very far away from everything

2020-05-24 23:36:05 UTC

There's almost nothing here deadly venomous.

2020-05-25 02:24:59 UTC

Woah! Snake bites are dry (no venom) about 80% of the time. If the bite has venom, a tourniquet is not a good idea. Keep your heart rate down, stay relaxed, drink water and get some assistance. Snake venom is processed in the body just fine and only extreme cases need antivenom

2020-05-25 02:26:08 UTC

A tourniquet will increase tissue damage greatly. The most dangerous part of a venomous bite is infection from the puncture wound.

2020-05-25 02:27:39 UTC

Clean and protect the wound and keep it that way. Also, venomous snakes rarely bite anyway unless you poke them with a stick or step on them

Through the god damned bone? That's hella scary.

2020-05-25 07:59:09 UTC

ive seen those things bite through broom handles and fishing poles

2020-05-25 07:59:12 UTC

mean fuckers

2020-05-25 09:38:26 UTC

@bravoN7 "get some assistance" is at least an hour away, and thats at the fastest.

2020-05-25 09:39:45 UTC

and they're everywhere out here. one of my guys about got chewed on a few days ago just doing his job and didn't see the snake until the last second.

2020-05-25 09:40:24 UTC

i completely understand that a tourniquet will increase tissue damage, and i even addressed it.

2020-05-25 09:41:24 UTC

i'm speaking purely from a perspective of keeping myself breathing long enough **to** get some assistance

2020-05-25 13:12:41 UTC

Damnnn that’s why I always stay away from those guys

2020-05-25 13:13:15 UTC

I was fishing once and I caught a fish and it came up and bit the fish clean in half. Only left me it’s head

2020-05-25 13:18:25 UTC

yeah snapping turtles will fuck you up

2020-05-25 14:00:51 UTC
