one particular way I see people being misled by issues like this is the framing of Islam vs. West as Barbarism vs. Civilization

Muslims are a symptom, the problem is internal, and a lot of energies are being channelled (imo by nefarious forces) towards clashes between groups rather than focusing on the underlying decay that causes the situation to develop in the first place
