to translate to bjj, the basic grips are a full "crushing" grip (for collar grips and chokes, and the rarer pistol-grip for sleeves), a finger-tip style false grip for sleeves, and a "monkey-paw" style grip for no-gi
there's very little thumb involved
I try to train my thumb just because I've injured it before
