I rib the UK more as a continuing joke, as the UK joining the EEC caused a lot of economic hardship for NZ in the 70s, but also set NZ on a path to rid itself of socialism.
NZ used to be a closed economy totally reliant on the UK, now is like #3 in the world for economic freedom. Just behind Singapore.

Which had their own terrorist group (ETA)
Basque is actually part in Spain and part in France
So they have an even lesser change of becoming independent

I kinda think immigration concerns might sink it.
Because CER is already strained between Australia and NZ over criminals, and NZ has just below 5 million people.
As for labour...I'd disagree in that, as you'd end up with an exodus of builders/tradespeople to Australia and to a much lesser extent NZ, as wages are higher and employment laws are better.
Plus that happens already.
Canada will join the North American Union with America and Mexico.
