We see fundamentalist interpretations of religion used to oppress others all the time. The Buddhists of Myanmar and their treatment of the Muslim Rohingya. The Hindus of India and treatment of Muslims. Christians all over an their treatment of Muslims and those who don't live up to their moral standards - LGBT. Muslims and their treatment of most other religions. It's not Islam that is cancer, it's fundamentalism. And because adherents to religion can often be associated with perceived racial differences, it becomes a basis for race-inspired atrocities.
