Economics inherently has no purpose, it's all about the purpose the current administration over a region gives it.

Our economics in the United States has the purpose of generating profits, China's is to produce a self sufficient country, and the EU is trying their hand at for the people.

I wouldn't call it dismal, it's only dismal if you look at it in a pessimistic way, look at the potential through the science of economics you learn.

Imagine ways to create more efficiency in the economy and to avoid the next crash you know.

I'd argue the opposite and actually say Economics is one of the most hopeful sciences there is.
