Literally any physical object can in principle be used as a currency. Ie. a trade medium between people.

I could use my pubic hairs as currency. But if I want people in my post apocalyptic neighborhood to use my pubes, I need to either have a vault with valuables to back those pubes up for people...or I could threaten to murder any who doesn't accept my pubes as currency...
