China only builds cities like this to inflate it's GDP.
while this may be the case for the ghost cities that are located in China, it's not the same for Africa - most of the cities have been built in anticipation of a huge wave of Chinese workers that will soon move to these African countries as to work in the projects there (most of them being related to resource extraction). The Chinese bring heavy equipment and "know-how", the Africans provide the actual manpower (literally slaves, as they have no working benefits, not even health insurance).

when it comes to South Africa and Zimbabwe, it's literally all about the chrome resources over there, nothing else. China is one of the largest producers of ferrochrome in the world, yet it has absolutely no chrome resources on their territories. In order to keep producing ferrochrome (used for steel manufacturing), they have to secure South Africa (which is the largest chrome exporter in the world) and Zimbabwe in order to have their hands on the raw resources. There was a huge push in the online a couple of months ago regarding this issue, with a lot of South Africans petitioning the Government to stop the export of chrome towards China and to subsequently focus on the production of ferrochrome within South Africa (as they already had the factories for it). It might be one of the reasons why the Chinese decided to move in Zimbabwe as well.

@Arcade_Hustle Their GDP is all smoke and mirrors .... these ghost cities are simply a symptom of keeping cement plants and construction firms going at all costs with fake "demand" ... if these firms are declared bankrupt then besides mass unemployment (not good for party control) the reckless lending practices of the various state banks and munipalities will be exposed.
It is not in anybodies interest for this to be exposed ... the west's economy will suffer badly as well and not only China.
Maybe we a need a nutjob like Trump just to be petulant enough not to listen to his Wall Street advisors to kick over the entire fairy tale.
If the Chinese do colonize SA, I wonder how they'd react when the workers strike.
