invented laser eye surgery

2019-07-28 01:16:05 UTC

made a lot of computers

2019-07-28 01:16:13 UTC

and they came from feudalism

2019-07-28 01:16:19 UTC

and had like 19% literacy

2019-07-28 01:16:55 UTC

but after the USSR was made they were up to 97% in the 70s

2019-07-28 01:17:45 UTC

what's poopin?

2019-07-28 01:17:54 UTC

The USSR was both a strong boon for the Russian people and something that left a whole lot of damage (as well as the many issues with the system during it's implementation)

2019-07-28 01:18:26 UTC

My parents are Russians who lived their lives in the USSR before they had me (right around the fall of the USSR) and migrated to the USA

2019-07-28 01:18:40 UTC

Trust me, I have heard about a million stories (besides doing my own research)

2019-07-28 01:18:57 UTC

the USSR in the 80s and 90s wasnt great

2019-07-28 01:19:03 UTC

due to capitalist policies

and they spent way too much on the military

2019-07-28 01:20:03 UTC

The education was excellent, for the most part (as far as technical knowledge goes). But the scarcity of resources and limits on personal freedom were really terrible. Of course, there are confounding variables such as the iron curtain

Marxism is actually quite progressive as far as human rights go - but the USSR did not embrace those aspects of the ideology

2019-07-28 01:21:00 UTC

marxism is culturally far left so yes

2019-07-28 01:21:55 UTC

I find religion (especially the organized kind) really awful and terrible - but even more terrible were the government sanctions (or prohibitions?) on practicing religion

2019-07-28 01:22:10 UTC

(as one example)

2019-07-28 01:22:58 UTC

Again, a confounding variable perhaps - as the USSR had many of their own stipulations that had nothing to do with Marxism

2019-07-28 01:23:25 UTC

religion causes problems

2019-07-28 01:23:25 UTC

GG @classy, you just advanced to level 2!

2019-07-28 01:23:26 UTC

so

2019-07-28 01:23:32 UTC

i support them trying to ban it

2019-07-28 01:24:13 UTC

but doesn't religion also give people hope? and as long as it isn't like... forceful in any way it's fine I think

2019-07-28 01:24:14 UTC

Religion DOES cause problems - but government prohibitions don't really curb the religious. It creates martyrs and shit

2019-07-28 01:24:29 UTC

religion may give people hope but its a scam

2019-07-28 01:24:30 UTC

For example, despite the USSR, Russia is still a deeply religious state

2019-07-28 01:24:39 UTC

you give them a ton of money monthly

2019-07-28 01:24:46 UTC

and it divides the working calss

2019-07-28 01:24:48 UTC

class*

2019-07-28 01:24:49 UTC

well yeah it is a scam if you don't believe in it

2019-07-28 01:25:26 UTC

The many years of prosecution and it being "under the table" didn't really change the sentiment of the Russian people - who are still fanatically faithful and intellectually defunct on many faith-related issues

2019-07-28 01:25:31 UTC

but what do you think many people would do without religion? it is way easier to just believe something happened because god said so.

2019-07-28 01:26:03 UTC

Religion is a disease, and Education is the antidote (for this, and many other problems)

2019-07-28 01:26:11 UTC

I know some people that want to be religious really bad because they think it is an easy way of life

2019-07-28 01:26:11 UTC

im not religious and im fine

2019-07-28 01:26:17 UTC

yeah me too

2019-07-28 01:26:22 UTC

but not everyone I think

2019-07-28 01:26:45 UTC

I "want" to be religious too - believing in magic and shit is really fun. Takes me back to my childhood.

2019-07-28 01:26:51 UTC

its a sad way to look at the world
