I've got ADHD and OCD (which, for the most part, I control and use as tools)

2018-05-17 19:22:57 UTC

So, I mean, having a psychologist call things disorders is one thing.

2018-05-17 19:23:10 UTC

It's a completely different thing when someone starts using the term politically.

2018-05-17 19:23:11 UTC

A good friend of mine, one of the first people I told about my issue, surprised me with him having it too, just that he never told anyone. is the best family father i've met. and the awesomeness of his family (which is some luck too of course) really balances that out

2018-05-17 19:23:15 UTC

hey, if the dysphoria isn't plagueing you too much really, I'd suggest trying the non-transitional route in life <.<" a functioning loving family can alleviate a lot of the subtle pain the dysphoria causes

2018-05-17 19:23:34 UTC

my message didint get through

2018-05-17 19:23:56 UTC

"theres also a bit of an existental question to whether sanity exists and mental order is even a real thing consitering what is a "typical" brain anyway? there arnt really perfect specimines of any creature because beyond clones no living thing is exactly the same as another outside incredible low probability"

2018-05-17 19:24:27 UTC

I mean, JBP kinda touches on that pretty frequently, too.

2018-05-17 19:24:46 UTC

yeah, essentially you could say that everything deviating from the statistical average, the normal, is a disorder, even a positive thing. There are positive sides to autism, if you're lucky and really just a high functioning one with few detriments. It happens in many math and physics and IT departments of universities. and yeah, OCD can have positive effects too, if channeled properly 😉

2018-05-17 19:25:16 UTC

It's far better to acknowledge that you're a monster kept in check than to pretend you're entirely altruistically good.

2018-05-17 19:25:22 UTC

most mathmatitians are autistic so there has to be a positive 😛

2018-05-17 19:25:25 UTC

(if you message doesn't get through, and gets red text, you can hit the three-dot-symbol and click "retry")

2018-05-17 19:25:51 UTC

i had to learn to keep my pathological altruism in check. and I still too often fail with that

2018-05-17 19:26:06 UTC

is really bad when you come across pathological liars of any kind

2018-05-17 19:26:09 UTC

i think what we really call disorders are social more than mental but they are observible neulogicly. something is a disorder though when you have functionality problems

2018-05-17 19:26:09 UTC

I'm sure everyone's had violent thoughts. The fact that you have the facilities to not act on them is what brings you to the side of good.

2018-05-17 19:27:05 UTC

I've often theorized that the rise of ADHD is an adaption to the information age.

2018-05-17 19:27:21 UTC

It's less a disorder, and more just a different order.

2018-05-17 19:27:27 UTC

i think disorder is applicable for things that are a detriment to your life; some you can integrate well, but eh... also for lack of a better word

2018-05-17 19:28:21 UTC

different environments favour different traits and abilities. @RyeNorth This is an interesting topic where epigenetics might play an interesting role. But I'm not versed enough in that area

2018-05-17 19:29:07 UTC

I mean, ADHD is labeled as a learning disability

2018-05-17 19:29:19 UTC

it's a focus problem

2018-05-17 19:29:23 UTC

but at the same time, I was tested early on with a rather high IQ.

2018-05-17 19:29:23 UTC

i also have adhd

2018-05-17 19:29:27 UTC

so yeah, can impede your learning

2018-05-17 19:29:38 UTC

The biggest problem I ever had in school

2018-05-17 19:29:40 UTC

and yeah i also was higher than average iq

2018-05-17 19:29:46 UTC

And what caused me to lose focus

2018-05-17 19:29:57 UTC

was that the lessons were always longer than they needed to be.

2018-05-17 19:30:09 UTC

to my knowledge adhd and high IQ are not mutually exclusive. may rather be to the contrary

2018-05-17 19:30:22 UTC

People with ADHD are generally able to jump from topic to topic and absorb.

2018-05-17 19:30:27 UTC

i never had a problem with focusing in school because hyper was more a problem for me, i never even wanted to focus let alone try and fail to

2018-05-17 19:30:49 UTC

i basicly refused to learn anything i didint choose to want to learn

2018-05-17 19:31:34 UTC

Well, among other things, the school system is pretty archaic.

2018-05-17 19:31:47 UTC

regarding learning with adhd, i've noticed a few different routes that can work. Either increase the sensory input around you to overload the constant processing (ie letting complex music run), or just increase the speed of a recording you're watching (ie a lecture) to force hyperfocus on that. include headphones too

2018-05-17 19:32:07 UTC

i agree, the school system is archaic in some ways and regressive in others

2018-05-17 19:32:08 UTC

know a few people for whom either works. the former is annoying when in semi-public places though <.<

2018-05-17 19:32:09 UTC

And the system as it is basically requires ADD kids to be put on speed.

2018-05-17 19:32:56 UTC

listening to the school my parents grew up in, i see flaws in it, but less flaws than now even

2018-05-17 19:33:02 UTC

school system, here in germany too, is completely incompatible with high IQ kids, autistic kids, ad(h)d kids etc.

2018-05-17 19:33:23 UTC

they do not check which learning types work best for which kinds of kids
