I hear that's fairly common in Japan, nowhere near the same stigma as in the West. Especially with mangaka a lot of them start out doing doujinshi before they're picked up. Which usually means porn
He was kind of the opposite he started out not making porn, but the comic series that put him on the map was Harenchi Gakuen (AKA "Shameless School") which is known as the granddaddy of ecchi & hentai manga.
So if you wonder how Japan came to the point where it was with the lewd stuff in anime & manga, then you can blame that on him.
He is notable for other things too like creating the Mecha Genre with Mazinger Z, Distilling modern Magical Girl with Cutie Honey which inspired stuff like *Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon*, also pushing bounds of darker anime/manga with Devilman that is Listed as a big influence by Neon Genesis Evangelion creator & also Berserk creator.
Somehow I doubt that’s the view of the majority of SA farmers or just completely fabricated.
