Proudhon's mutualism was the first of the explicitly anarchist philosophies, before the various schools of anarchism defined themselves in economic terms, so it is distinguished from most other forms of anarchism by the fact that it does not *preclude* some form of market exchange. But the heart of the original mutualism was Proudhon's social science, which started with a critique of exploitation in both the economic sphere ("property is theft") and the political sphere ("governmentalism"), with that critique based on an analysis of "collective force" (the effects of social cooperation and association.)

There are two primary modern forms of anarchist mutualism: 1) a "neo-Proudhonian" tendency, which is engaged in recovering and applying Proudhon's social scientific thought; and 2) a "free-market anti-capitalist" form of market anarchism, which draws much of its inspiration from the individualist anarchism of Benjamin R. Tucker. The second is primarily concerned with the elimination of monopoly conditions in the economy.
