its meant to prevent mob rule basically

2018-05-23 01:40:30 UTC

exactly

2018-05-23 01:40:31 UTC

I find the Electoral College an interesting idea

2018-05-23 01:40:44 UTC

it's wack because you think "wait, more people liked you but you still lost?!"

2018-05-23 01:40:49 UTC

but then you realize

2018-05-23 01:40:58 UTC

"oh, a lot of those areas were echo chambers"

2018-05-23 01:41:12 UTC

I've seen videos where they teach children that America is a Democracy

2018-05-23 01:41:24 UTC

And I'm like "..Wut?"

2018-05-23 01:41:40 UTC

I would call the US

2018-05-23 01:41:43 UTC

a half-democracy

2018-05-23 01:42:18 UTC

Well, it's a form of Democracy

2018-05-23 01:42:20 UTC

the only question i have is the different rules around the electors votes. some have them vote whatever they want, others are winner of the popular in the state takes all. i don't know if there is one that splits them up roughly off the popular results. like 60 40 if that was the popular

2018-05-23 01:42:25 UTC

the US is a republic

2018-05-23 01:42:38 UTC

Constitutional Republic. Forgot the damn name for a sec 😛

2018-05-23 01:42:45 UTC

almost all states are winner-take-all

2018-05-23 01:42:53 UTC

almost all

2018-05-23 01:43:07 UTC

there are like 1 or 2 states that are ratio based

2018-05-23 01:43:32 UTC

I wonder how messing with that would change things

2018-05-23 01:43:33 UTC

also electors can technically vote freely but I don't think they ever really do, pretty sure most states have repercussions if they do

2018-05-23 01:43:49 UTC

depends on the election grenade

2018-05-23 01:43:54 UTC

some years it'd be virtually meaningless

2018-05-23 01:43:58 UTC

some years it would fuck shit up

2018-05-23 01:45:57 UTC

well obviously it would only matter in close elections. but i wonder if it would chance much how candidates would campaign

2018-05-23 01:46:16 UTC

it might actually change that substantially

2018-05-23 01:46:48 UTC

because electoral votes to population would be roughly equal across the entire country

2018-05-23 01:46:54 UTC

so campaigning would be roughly balanced

2018-05-23 01:47:23 UTC

it would also mean that traditionally blue/red states would get at least a little bit more campaigning

2018-05-23 01:47:28 UTC

so they could at least win some votes

2018-05-23 01:48:28 UTC

the main problem i have with winner takes all is that, take for example cali, a republican might as well not vote

2018-05-23 01:49:10 UTC

so i wonder if removing those rules would help make votes matter a little more, while still preventing mob rule by balancing the states with the electors

2018-05-23 01:59:31 UTC

Speaking of campaigning.. Hillary spent a lot of time gone, while Trump campaigned a lot

2018-05-23 01:59:56 UTC

He's energetic for being what, 70?
