probably should have left shortly after apartheid ended. This is like WWII in mini-scale.
You have these farms with at most a family or two on them. Owners, their kids, and maybe a farmhand or two. Nothing but open terrain for miles. That's impossible to physically defend, let alone defend while still working the farm and making a living.

Doing a watch rotation on a single point for any significant length of time requires a lot of people. Two men on watch for two hours. If you have four people you can't do it for more than a day without becoming tired and complacent. Six can keep it up for 2-3 days. Takes more like 8-10 to do it on a permanent basis.

Doesn't really help much. In order to mount a defense they'd need money to buy weapons. Not merely rifles but ATGMs and MANPADs. In order to earn that money they'd need to keep their farms in operation. Keeping their farms in operation would mean keeping them staffed, which means their forces are spread all over the country and can be killed peacemeal. There's no military solution here. They should just leave.

The South African government is very well equipped with light vehicles and weaponry. Much, much better equipped than some farmers with rifles. And the government has tied its electoral survival to seizing land. It's going to happen.
