@pratel I don't see any Trump-like figure on the federal political Canadian landscape at the moment. The closest thing may be Max Bernier and he recently left the main opposition party to start his own party. My guess is that Trudeau gets a minority government in 2019. I'd say the Liberal Party lost Quebec with that "budget is racism" error which is nuts considering that's where his family is from. I'd be ecstatic if the Liberal Party gets blown out in 2019 but I don't see that happening. I could be full of shit though lol who knows

“ AP exclusive: Franklin funeral bishop apologizes to Grande” by Josh Replogle on AP Associated Press

Media makes a big deal that a preacher hugged a woman and made a joke. Meanwhile Nation of Islam’s Louis Farrakhan was in attendance and they don’t care. This is a man that advocates for the killing of whites and Jews. Really makes you wonder about the media’s focus.

"'Texas law long has given survey access and use of eminent domain to railroads, pipelines, electrical lines and other industries that provide for a public good and a strong economy," the company said

2018-09-01 17:35:06 UTC

You don't have private property.

2018-09-01 18:06:34 UTC

I'm not sure what method they plan to use for land acquisition really... But we have what are called 'easements'. I've got land that was abandoned by the railroad behind my own house that has defaulted to adjacent land as their property.

2018-09-01 18:06:42 UTC

We own the land, but we have to allow for the pipeline right of way.

2018-09-01 18:07:12 UTC

However, if they want to go and do any serious work on a pipeline, they have to contact us first and can't just start digging up.

2018-09-01 18:07:15 UTC

It's... interesting.

2018-09-01 18:11:25 UTC

lol recently there was a pipeline project proposed in proper with people in power of putting proper procedure in place. the pipeline purveyors payed people for property and were prohibited post-purchase, proving perilous to their project.

2018-09-01 18:12:03 UTC

(I got like three P words in a row and decided to run with it... still a true story.)

2018-09-01 18:15:24 UTC

(My movie would be called "P for Pretentious")

2018-09-01 18:38:42 UTC

did you guys buy the property after or before the pipeline?

2018-09-01 18:39:12 UTC

Easements is similar to a lot of radio towers

2018-09-01 18:39:52 UTC

but this is basically forcing you into a easement arrangement. But for railroads, i don't think they can do easements.

2018-09-01 18:40:10 UTC

because its too much of a risk. pipelines are mostly enclosed if they are not underground

2018-09-01 18:40:17 UTC

railroads are like highways

2018-09-01 18:40:41 UTC

imagine someone having the right to just walk or anything all over a section of highway

2018-09-01 18:40:53 UTC

the risk to all involved would be crazy

2018-09-01 18:41:15 UTC

and either way, they can just force it.

2018-09-01 18:41:29 UTC

is it really your land if the government says "yeah, you own it.... but we get to say what goes on it"

2018-09-01 18:42:15 UTC

and its not even the state that is doing it i don't think

2018-09-01 18:42:32 UTC

the state has the power, in this case, to take your land, and then hand it to basically a private company

2018-09-01 18:49:00 UTC

@Dan V I keep hearing Doug Ford passed around.

No one expected Trump either. He just sorta appeared all of a sudden.

2018-09-01 18:50:09 UTC

@Grenade123 Usually, people don't mind these easements too much. Traditionally, it's the oil companies who do it and they tend to bury their pipes and then pay handsomely.

Railroads would be more like roads, and I'm not sure how exactly that would work.

2018-09-01 18:52:30 UTC

people don't mind easements because they basically still have right to use the land

2018-09-01 18:52:37 UTC

but these people are farmers.

2018-09-01 18:53:10 UTC

and they are gonna be building berms to raise the railraod a bit

2018-09-01 18:53:25 UTC

inhibiting livestock movement and causing runoff

2018-09-01 18:54:03 UTC

they would need to pay enough to offset lost revenue and increased cost of business at the least

2018-09-01 18:54:30 UTC

you are right, pipelines people don't usually mind

2018-09-01 19:01:03 UTC

Yeah, we shall see. Among most native Texans, rail projects tend to be unpopular (but the politicians insist on them anyway, particularly Democrats in major cities chasing after SF/LA/NYC). I got a feeling they'll start seizing rights and then the project falls through.

2018-09-01 19:01:26 UTC

*unless the Democrats seize the state government*

2018-09-01 19:02:15 UTC

Currently it's privately funded IIRC. I'm not sure where the ridership would come from and I got a feeling when the bills start coming due the investors will likely run out of cash.

2018-09-01 19:30:01 UTC

i mean, high speed transit between two major cities and a college, there is a chance there could be some good ridership there. at least from tourist and business people

2018-09-01 19:30:07 UTC

and college students

2018-09-01 19:31:03 UTC

Hm, Japan has the Shinkansen, doesn't China have the Transrapid??
