@Poppy Rider Ringo is probably one of my favorite writers. Another sci-fi series of his is the Into the Looking Glass series where a bunch of portals to different places in the galaxy open up, resulting in aliens advancing human tech rapidly to help them fight a common enemy also invading earth.
