I can find nothing indicating that Sruoga was actually in the SS

2018-10-25 13:10:53 UTC

Consider that he was 43 when the war started

2018-10-25 13:10:57 UTC

he wasn't

2018-10-25 13:11:04 UTC

he was a political prisoner

2018-10-25 13:12:15 UTC

there were attempts to form a Lithuanian SS legion, but it failed.

2018-10-25 13:13:55 UTC

I said over half of the SS were foreign, you said most were sent to concentration camps

2018-10-25 13:14:13 UTC

I took that to mean you said most SS men were sent to concentration camps

2018-10-25 13:16:04 UTC

I believe foreign SS members were sent to lagers either after they exhausted their use, or tried to rebel, however, without examining the proper documentation it's impossible to state it, so it's mostly a hypothesis.

2018-10-25 13:16:13 UTC

Foreign SS recruits had to be age 17-45 so any foreigner born 1896 had to join before 1941

2018-10-25 13:17:10 UTC

No such thing as exhausted their use on the Eastern Front, note the use of Hitlerjugend in the last days

2018-10-25 13:17:30 UTC

and the afromention book may be a questionable source, because soviet censorship fucked with the manuscript.

2018-10-25 13:18:41 UTC

they were pretty desperate in the last days, true

2018-10-25 13:19:23 UTC

another hypothesis could be that the krauts just used them to commit war crimes, then whacked them afterwards.

2018-10-25 13:20:09 UTC

but most likely the lot of them were sent head first into the red army's mg nests.

2018-10-25 13:20:59 UTC

No. They were used as soldiers, not cannon fodder. No different than national units or the army

2018-10-25 13:21:46 UTC

The SS that managed the concentration camps was separate from the fighting units

2018-10-25 13:22:02 UTC

And easily confused by being called SS-VT and SS-TV

2018-10-25 13:22:30 UTC

Anything you see with SS-TV is Holocaust stuff

2018-10-25 13:22:51 UTC

SS-VT were later renamed Waffen-SS and were fighting men

2018-10-25 13:24:01 UTC

SS-TV were distinguished by the death's head on their collar

2018-10-25 13:28:16 UTC

The W-SS 3rd Panzer Division was made up of former TV, and did a lot of horrible things. The 13th, 21st, and 23rd Mountain Divisions were made up of eastern Euro Muslims who committed the vast majority of war crimes in eastern Europe outside of the camps

2018-10-25 13:30:09 UTC

that's pretty interesting stuff, however, to study that here as a historian pretty much means a career suicide if you fail to comply with the current dogmas.

2018-10-25 13:31:33 UTC

Same in America

2018-10-25 13:32:05 UTC

Those Muslims units were the only religious troops. They didn't have chaplains in other SS units

2018-10-25 13:33:28 UTC

Studying the WW2 and post war here, goes pretty much like this: Krauts - good, jewshooting never happened(Lietukis garage pogrom), russia evil. no deviations allowed.

2018-10-25 13:33:45 UTC

Wow

2018-10-25 13:33:50 UTC

that's why as a history major, I'm taking medieval studies more or less

2018-10-25 13:33:54 UTC

Interesting, it's the exact opposite here

2018-10-25 13:34:25 UTC

Then you will probably like this book

2018-10-25 13:34:59 UTC

It's legit, I've read it

2018-10-25 13:40:06 UTC

I'll have to find a PDF of it. Not many books about the German side, most WW2 stuff here is on how average soviet soldier raped babies and shit

2018-10-25 13:40:24 UTC

the one that's translated at least.

2018-10-25 13:41:50 UTC

I wouldn't say average, but it did happen

2018-10-25 13:42:08 UTC

Having read what few firsthand accounts exist from the Red Army

2018-10-25 13:42:15 UTC

Good people don't survive long

2018-10-25 13:43:25 UTC

Communist armies are set up with a unique command structure where an officer second in command is appointed by the party office at each level. The political commissar, responsible for discipline, administrative tasks, and ideology. He can also override the commander in many cases

2018-10-25 13:43:42 UTC

the commisars were utter morons

2018-10-25 13:43:46 UTC

Those are the ones in the famous photos that would shoot you in the back for retreating

2018-10-25 13:44:02 UTC

Yes, because they were chosen based on politics, not leadership ability

2018-10-25 13:44:05 UTC

sometimes it would be the other way around.
