Modern 9mm is decent compared to the shit they had .45 is to much for most female officers and smaller manlets and 40 covers alot of the in between
It all depends on what you deem most desirable. If you are looking a pure round count then 9mm wins hands down. Glock with a stick mag and you have 33 shots. You want nice big slugs, 45 is your guy. 40 is the middle child nobody can decide if they like or not.
The best thing I would say @Major Kay. go to a gun store with a gun range and try things

I recommend Glocks because they're simple, affordable, and easy to clean/maintain
If you wanna spend money and want the Porsche, you can go with a Sig
If you want to be cheap but not have people laugh at you, you can go with Ruger
or if you want something really really simple
a Smith and Wesson or Colt revolver
Thesoldier is right. You need to find the gun that works for you. I personally don't like the average Glock because I like manual safeties. And you really cannot overstate the feel in your hand. My brother in law has a Taurus I hate to shoot because the mag joint on the extended mag bites me if I use a full grip.
