Want to get into firearms
For personal and home defense
Any recommendations
Depends on what your looking for exactly
Stopping power and compact
Semi auto
stopping power doesn't really come with handguns
shotguns best for home
as far as handguns go you're best off going into a store and discussing it with someone
I would really recommend just taking a basic weapons course. Most ranges offer them, that is a good place to start. The one I took as a kid let you shoot several different guns, rifle, pistol, and shotgun. Just to let you get an idea of what it was all about.
I personally have a cannon mounted at the top of my stairs
Here's the problem with stopping power and compact @Major Kay.
Everyone and their mother will say you need .45 ACP for stopping power
problem is with compact firearms that fire .45 ACP is recoil and control
the smaller the gun and barrel, the more recoil.
with a heavier bigger round
You want compact, 9mm Glock 27 or Glock 42
or 43
You want power, full size .45
.40 is a good compromise, it's what alot of the PD officers by me carry but a good 9mm is just as well. Stopping power is useless if you can't hit
the FBI keeps flip flopping on this
They went from 9mm to .40 S&W
then said .45 is better
now they say we were wrong 9mm is the best
Modern 9mm is decent compared to the shit they had .45 is to much for most female officers and smaller manlets and 40 covers alot of the in between
It all depends on what you deem most desirable. If you are looking a pure round count then 9mm wins hands down. Glock with a stick mag and you have 33 shots. You want nice big slugs, 45 is your guy. 40 is the middle child nobody can decide if they like or not.
The best thing I would say @Major Kay. go to a gun store with a gun range and try things
^^
find a gun you like and you can control, and there you go
I recommend Glocks because they're simple, affordable, and easy to clean/maintain
If you wanna spend money and want the Porsche, you can go with a Sig
If you want to be cheap but not have people laugh at you, you can go with Ruger
or if you want something really really simple
a Smith and Wesson or Colt revolver
Thesoldier is right. You need to find the gun that works for you. I personally don't like the average Glock because I like manual safeties. And you really cannot overstate the feel in your hand. My brother in law has a Taurus I hate to shoot because the mag joint on the extended mag bites me if I use a full grip.
