I don't know about Chinese, but Japamese sentence structure is Subject-Object-Verb as opposed to English's Subject-Verb-Object so it does make sense that a robot would get confused

i find that the best way to use google translate is to use single words or small snippets and then form the sentences yourself using the words it gives you

requires basic knowledge of the language first in order to understand how to structure the sentence and modify some of the words based on context tho

I think the best way to use google translate is to take a phrase or quote, run it through as many iterations as you want, translate it back to english, and see what you end up with.
