2018-08-11 06:47:20 UTC

@Timcast upon seeing the twitter ban video, first thing i came to think of <https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2018/07/cage-the-mastodon/>

2018-08-11 06:48:34 UTC

I'd prefer to use somemthing like minds

2018-08-11 06:54:43 UTC

Are you bashing Mastodon?

2018-08-11 06:54:57 UTC

Nah

mastodon seems interesting but I know nothing about it

2018-08-11 06:59:37 UTC

i should have an article on how to use hubzilla as well, but that one is more like facebook

2018-08-11 07:01:12 UTC

@angeryer it is very twitter-esque

2018-08-11 07:02:06 UTC

😨

2018-08-11 07:02:12 UTC

Why would anyone wanna ape twitter

2018-08-11 07:02:24 UTC

It's one of the worst mediums I've ever seen.

2018-08-11 07:02:44 UTC

it is still quite new

2018-08-11 07:03:09 UTC

but it is federated which is a plus

2018-08-11 07:03:14 UTC

I don't even use twitter anyway

2018-08-11 07:03:20 UTC

but federated is pretty rad

2018-08-11 07:04:23 UTC

I actually like the idea of twitter, basically thinking of it as a big chatroom. it's terrible for serious discussion of course.

2018-08-11 07:04:48 UTC

It's cool, but doesn't interest me all that much

2018-08-11 07:05:13 UTC

*maximum default message length is 500 charactets*

2018-08-11 07:05:28 UTC

i see twitter more like a rss feed

2018-08-11 07:06:26 UTC

With twitter and the small character limit, every tweet seemed like a bold declarative statement. A recipe for the most arguments of any medium. You would be actively punished with less viewership for going more in-depth. It became difficult to read your posts as one whole.

2018-08-11 07:06:28 UTC

With tumblr..

2018-08-11 07:06:40 UTC

The problem is less obvious with tumblr, but just as malignant.

2018-08-11 07:06:54 UTC

Suppose everyone you follow on tumblr is in some sort of heated argument.

2018-08-11 07:07:08 UTC

From your perspective, everyone you follow is DUNKING on their opponents all the time.

2018-08-11 07:07:11 UTC

iirc on mastodon you can limit who can read the post, followers only etc

2018-08-11 07:07:21 UTC

No one you follow is ever wrong.

2018-08-11 07:08:24 UTC

1st and 2nd parties are arguing. 3rd party only follows the first.

2018-08-11 07:08:54 UTC

The 3rd party only knows the 2nd party won the argument when the 1st party chooses to reblog it. And guess how often that happens.

2018-08-11 07:10:13 UTC

yeah twitter "threaded conversations" are the wurst

2018-08-11 07:10:17 UTC

moldy wurst

2018-08-11 07:13:53 UTC

wish Usenet or something like mailists take over next

2018-08-11 07:13:57 UTC

with proper threading

2018-08-11 07:14:17 UTC

remember forums

2018-08-11 07:14:19 UTC

good times

2018-08-11 07:14:35 UTC

most are not that threaded

2018-08-11 07:14:44 UTC

threaded is doo doo

2018-08-11 07:14:47 UTC

donate to my patreon

2018-08-11 07:15:44 UTC

discourse got some threading, but is more like twitters where it only shows replies

2018-08-11 07:16:23 UTC

talkyard.io is similar to how reddit looks
