What was really sad, was the cancellation of the X-33 tho

they had linear aerospike engines, which essentially used hydrolauics to shift the shape of the rocket nozzle so that it was efficient at all attitudes

additionally it was a lifting body orbiter, which allowed it to use lift on ascent and save fuel with a different flight profile

but big rip because x-33 got cancelled in early 2000s due to political decisions made based on problems that had already been solved
