Well in 1940 World Almanac gives the world Jewish population as 15,319,359, while the 1948 World Almanac gives the world Jewish population as 15,713,638.

i would say it was in the hundreds of thousands going up to 1 million potentially but definitely not in the 6 million region

the soviets did lie though, they exaggerated many things that were soon redacted when they were way too implausible for example mass electrocutons and Jews being turned into soap. not to mention they lied about this: In 1989 in the former concentration camp of Auschwitz, a plaque claiming that four million people had been murdered there, mainly Jews, is replaced with a plaque stating that one and a half million had died there. Strangely, the figure of six million Jews dying in the holocaust is not reduced accordingly to reflect this two and a half million reduction of the stated death toll at Auschwitz. Furthermore, no reasons for this reduction in the death toll at Auschwitz, nor the fact the six million figure has not been reduced to reflect this reduction are ever given.

while Hoess' confession says “I declare herewith under oath that in the years 1941-1943 during my tenure in office as commandant of Auschwitz Concentration Camp 2 million Jews were put to death by gassing and a 1/2 million by other means"

the original plaque said " Four million people suffered and died here at the hands of the Nazi murderers between the years 1940 and 1945"
